Development of Ammonia Fueled Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can generate electricity through an electrochemical conversion of the chemical energy fuels including hydrogen, hydrocarbons, and biogas because high operation temperatures. Ammonia has recently been considered as a promising hydrogen carrier that is relatively convenient to store transport be decomposed into nitrogen with no carbon emission via catalytic cracking. Thus, much effort made utilize ammonia clean SOFCs for power generation at efficiency. This review aiming delivering current progress developing temperature ceramic fed ammonia, particularly more focused on achievements direct fueled SOFC (DA-SOFC) shed light challenges degrading performance durability. The problems are primarily attributed lack rational catalysts, thermal imbalance, evolution nitrides components Ni based anode, mesh collector, stainless steels metallic interconnect exposed environment incurring microstructural deformations electrical deteriorations. Lastly, strategic pathways overcome inadequate instability suggested accomplish commercialization DA-SOFCs.
